Better treatment for lice
Head lice are one of the most common infestations in the world, especially in children. These tiny insects feed on the blood of the human scalp and can cause itching and redness. Although lice do not transmit diseases, they can be very annoying and difficult to eliminate. In this article, we will talk about the different types of lice, the symptoms they cause, and the treatments available.
Types of lice
There are three main types of lice that affect humans: head lice, body lice, and pubic lice. Head lice are the most common and mainly affect school-age children. Body lice are most commonly found in people living in crowded and unhygienic conditions, such as the homeless. Pubic lice, also known as crabs, are transmitted through sexual contact and can be found in pubic hairs, armpits, and beard.
Symptoms of lice infestation
Head lice infestation can cause itching and redness on the scalp, and small spots of blood may appear on bedding or clothing. Head lice and eggs (called nits) can also be seen in the hair, especially at the base of the scalp and behind the ears. Although lice do not transmit diseases, the itching can be intense and it may be difficult to sleep or concentrate on daily activities.
Treatment for lice infestation usually involves removing lice and nits from the hair. Several treatments are available, including:
- Wet combing – this method involves moistening the hair and combing it with a special lice comb. This comb has very thin teeth and together, which allows to remove lice and nits from the hair. This method is safe and effective, but requires patience and time to be effective.
- Medicated shampoos: There are several medicated shampoos that contain insecticides that kill lice and nits. It is important to follow the instructions carefully and repeat the treatment after a week to ensure that all lice and nits have been removed.
- Essential oils: Some essential oils, such as tea tree oil, are believed to have anti-lice properties. These oils can be applied directly to the hair and left on for several hours before washing.
- Home Remedies: There are several home remedies that are believed to be effective against lice, such as vinegar, mayonnaise, and olive oil. However, the effectiveness of these remedies has not been scientifically proven and they may be less effective than medical treatments.
It is important to remember that lice treatments should be applied to all people living in the same household or close environment to the infested person to prevent a new infestation. It is also important to wash bedding, towels and any other clothing that has been in contact with the infested person in hot water and dry it at high temperature. Non-washable objects, such as combs, brushes and hats, should be immersed in hot water for at least 10 minutes or placed in a sealed plastic bag for at least two weeks to ensure that any louse or nits present have died.
Also, it’s important not to share combs, brushes, hats, or other personal items with others to prevent the spread of lice.
In summary, lice are a common infestation that can be effectively treated with various methods, such as wet styling, medicated shampoos, essential oils, and home remedies. It is important to take steps to prevent the spread of lice and follow the instructions carefully to ensure that all lice and nits have been removed. If symptoms persist after treatment, medical attention should be sought to rule out any other conditions.
